Well, we didn't get any honey this year but we believe Rebekah's hive is strong enough to survive the winter. This was a very hard year for bees due to the wet spring. Rebekah went to a beekeeping meeting on Saturday. They had people report on how new hives did this year and a few people got between 5-15 lbs. but these were people who live in rural areas where there are more flowers/weeds for the bees to gather. Several veteran bee keepers lost some of their hives. One of our neighbors lost two of his four hives. Another neighbor got two new hives and one did great but the other died. Right now, Rebekah needs to be feeding her bees so they can be sure to stock their frames for winter. Her boxes are quite heavy and that is a good sign so hopefully they will make it until spring.
More robbing! Yesterday Rebekah noticed her hive was under attack. Her guard bees were doing a good job defending themselves but we decided to cover her hive with a cloth again.
I am also interested in how the bees are doing.
ReplyDeleteMe too. They are cool to learn about.
